Questions and Answers with Founder Bob Hannigan

Q: When did you start gardening?

I first started growing vegetables after moving to New Jersey (please insert “Garden State” joke here) in 1997.

Q: When did garden protection become a problem?

I stopped in 2003 due 3 consecutive years having my 8 x 10 foot garden crop destroyed by mostly deer. It is not a gradual thing with deer, they can eat the entire crop overnight.

Q: What have you tried to prevent this from happening again?

I tried wire cones and individual cages but they would just be knocked over. Stakes and chicken wire were out of the question because it is an eyesore and difficult to enter/exit for maintenance and picking your crop.

Q: Besides the unsightliness of stakes and chicken wire, were there other factors?

A lack of time setting up and dismantling chicken wire, and I did not want the hassle every year of constructing the unit and then tearing it down. I was not sure it would be strong enough to withstand a stubborn deer.

Q: Was it for the enjoyment and satisfaction of growing your own and having fresh product to pick daily?

I find growing vegetables very rewarding. Nothing compares to the taste and nutritional value of fresh home garden vegetables.

Q: Was there any specific health reason to grow your own? Allergies, pesticide concerns, lack of quality or taste from produce at the grocery store etc.

A home Garden ensures that your crop is grown organically (no pesticides or fertilizers) and one of the most healthy things you can do for your body.

Q: Was there no other product on the market like this? In a hardware or home store (like Home Depot) or online etc.

There was nothing like what I had envisioned for garden fencing on the market, whether in stores or online. There were the usual do-it-yourself materials like four foot metals poles, chicken wire, roll-up fencing but nothing that was easy to put up and take down season after season. And certainly I did not want anything that looked like Stalag-13 or the state penitentiary.

So, with my founding partner Amit, we came up with The Garden Defender. And that has me back growing my own garden and in the gardening business helping out fellow gardeners with same dilemma that I faced!
